Describe it in 5 words: Magical, breathtaking, funny, stunning and emotional.
Strengths: This show is simply one of the best out there and to see it with three of the main character standbys was amazing. Deej (Nikki Davis-Jones) is an amazing Elphaba and she even threw in some Kerry-Ellis-style growls in the last few minutes of Defying Gravity. Lewis has improved so much as Fiyero, he gave mr Oli Tompsett a run for his money in this particular performance…he is definitely the best Fiyero of this cast! Louise was hilarious as ever. Popular is now getting on for 15 minutes long…I’m not complaining!! This was my first time seeing Danny Mac as Boq, he gave a very fresh performance although I do love the way George plays it! Overall a fantastic show and a brilliant (almost super) standby performance!! And to top of this fabulous performance, the show ended with my favourite bit of music…the overture…and Louise called the audience to silence, the thanked us for the deserved standing ovation and asked us to take our seats. She then announced that Wicked was 4 years old and we did 3 cheers and then hundreds of balloons, like those in my photo above, dropped from the ceiling!! It was magical!
Flaws: There are no flaws to Wicked but in this particular performance, Louise/Galinda’s bubble didn’t appear on stage as it normally should and so the first few lines of the show (including ‘it’s good to see me isn’t it’ etc) were missed out as she attempted to decide what to do. The show started with ‘let us be grateful’!
Have you seen Wicked? What do you think of it? Do you prefer standbys or principals?
