MiniHobo’s Review:

WOW! It is so hard to know where to start with this review.  Do I start with the magnificant building in which I cheered, clapped and standing ovated? Or perhaps I should begin with the ecstatic atmosphere filled with musical theatre fans, rock fans and Brian May pilgrims? Or would it be disrespectful not to mention first the unquestionably important work of Leukemia and Lymphona Research?  Do I go with my head and review in detail the set, lighting, sound, direction and the many costume changes? Or do I go with my heart and start with the reason most of use were there – KERRY ELLIS!!

Nearly 2 years to the day since she left WICKED (May 9th will always be known as Kerry Ellis Day!), Kerry signed, sealed and delivered, confirming that she is indeed the QUEEN of musical theatre.  With 4 impressive costume changes, rifftastic anthems (both vocally and guitarally!) and flawless, stunning vocals, she went from stage songstress and friend of Brian May to international megastar.  She growled the crowd into no less than 3 standing ovations and her vocals could’ve become a live recording with NO editing necessary – at one point I was longing for her to miss a note just to show she’s not perfect but, I am jealous to confirm that indeed, she is!!

Kerry has an incredible way of effortlessly making her concerts a personal performance; I felt she was there for me and only me.  And while proving herself a superstar, never once did she show diva tendencies – she gave recognition where due to every single person on the stage; a very humbling trait in such a well-loved performer.

You may notice I haven’t mentioned too much detail about the performances.  This is because you, as the reader, will fall into one of the following 3 catagories:

  1. You were at Anthems: The Concert. In which case you are looking at this with your own opinions already in tact….please stick them in the comments so I can have a nosey at them…I’d love to know what you thought!!
  2. You are going to Anthems: The Concert when it tours. In which case I don’t want to give away anything except that you will have the time of your life and the Ellis and the May will not disappoint.
  3. You didn’t go and you aren’t booked in. In which case…whyever not?  If you love Kerry, or Brian, or rock, or musicals, or music full stop…you need to book tickets.  It’s a showstopping production that puts X Factor alumni and many of the chart topping artists to shame!

We were very lucky last night to also witness the musical talent of Adam Pascal, Escala and Dan Gillespie.  Dan (from The Feeling) joined Kerry and Brian on stage to sing ‘I love it when you call’.   He added an extra dimension that we hadn’t heard on the CD and they were having a ball  up there on stage!! Adam Pascal sang a selection of songs from RENT, HAIR and Spring Awakening.  My personal favourite was Seasons Of Love! Escala performed a couple of Anthems however I don’t think the concert would have been any more or less enjoyable without them there.

If you were at Anthems…what did you think?  If you are going…how excited are you? If neither…why not?? Leave me a loverrrrly comment!!

Thanks

Name of Artist: Kerry Ellis

Lowdown of Artist: From Stage to Ghettoblaster!! Kerry has graced the famous stages of the West End and Broadway in Wicked, Oliver!, Les Mis, We Will Rock You and many other much-loved musicals.  She has been a strong presence in the ‘Showbiz’ world and her name has been cropping up more and more with her collaboration with Queen Ultimo-Guitarist Brian May!

Name of Album: Anthems

UK Release Date: 13th September 2010

Genre: Rock, Pop and Showtunes!

Tracks: 11

Best Track: Defying Gravity

Worst Track: Gosh, I don’t think I could choose a ‘worst track’…but I guess my least favourite would be I’m Not That Girl.

Rating out of 10: 10

Recommend: Certainly

Describe it in 5 words: Rocking, Singalong, growl-friendly, divaish, exhilarating!

MiniHobo’s Review:

This album was a veeerrrry long time in the making and had so much showbiz hype surrounding it that there was the possibility it could not live up to the excitement.  Thankfully, that didn’t happen and instead it ripped through the hype, burst out of the ‘showbiz’ bubble and made a rightful appearance in the real world for everyone to enjoy.

Kerry and Brian spent ages making, writing, recording and promoting this album and, although I don’t have any official sale figures, I’d like to predict that it’s been to much success!

Like the title suggests, this record is full of rocking, show stopping, killer anthems that just make you want to turn the volume up, sing like nobody’s listening and dance like no one is around!  It contains songs from Kerry’s career, songs that have been turning points in her life and an original track and some new lyrics on classic tracks!

For any musical theatre fan this absolutely is a must-have album.  For any rock fan this is a must-listen album!

What do you think of Kerry and her first solo album??

Recommend: Yes I would definitely recommend. My favourite show in the westend. If it tours, Go see it!!
Describe it in 5 words: It is Bloody amazing dude! (5 words Haha!)

George’s Review: This show really is amazing! If Im going to be honest, I went to the show to see Kerry Ellis in her last musical theatre show for a while! But as soon as the overture started the show automatically shot to the top of my list! Like I am not kidding, This show was phenomenal! Before the matinee show I met all of the main cast and they were all so lovely, Especially Kerry!! In a way I was wishing the show away because I wanted to hear Ms Ellis sing As Long As He Needs Me, Seriously, this song was amazing and the growl at the end was to die for! The best bit in the whole show for me was Consider Yourself because it just sold the show, seriously the whole cast really went for it!

Thanks George for that great review.

An Apology (A Lady Antebellum Addition)

[LadyA]

Dearest Hobo followers,

I have something very important to share with you.  Recently I did a post on 10 Albums I Never Get Bored Of.  I must apologise because this list no longer stands as it is.  It would appear there need to be some additions to it.  I would like to hereby rename the post 13 Albums I Never Get Bored Of as there are 3 other albums that must grace this list with their presence.

Firstly Taylor Swift – Taylor Swift.  It is the album she released before Fearless.  A big deal was not made of it in the UK but recently I’ve been listening to it more than fearless.  My favourite song is Picture To Burn – an amazing song that you can’t help but sing along to.

Secondly, Kerry Ellis – Anthems.  See my other post for more info on this album but I am convinced that the word ‘boring’ will never be used to describe this album….ever!

Lastly, Lady Antebellum – Need You Now.  This band is a very recent discovery of mine, recommended by my bungalowmate.  It is SUCH a good road-trip album with numerous sing-along numbers.  My favourite songs on the album are Need You Now (their title track released for the UK chart and currently being played on Heart radio stations around the country), American Honey and Perfect Day.  But there are now skippable songs and the album just rings of everything that I love about music.  Their sound is very much a mixture of country, pop and rock.  I LOVE it!

Thank you very much for reading and, again, many apologies for the change of heart.  After all, I am female, I’m allowed to change my mind (a lot!).

Have any albums caught your eye recently?

The Truly Anthemic Voice Of Miss Kerry Ellis

It has been a very long time coming, personally I have waited 18 months for this, but, during a girly holiday in Cornwall, Kerry Ellis’ album, Anthems, arrived through my letterbox.  I think the girls I was holidaying with would agree that I could not retain my excitement.  As soon as I arrived home, the signed CD from Play.com was in the ghettoblaster filling my house with anthemic noise.

The album has 11 tracks, 3 of which featured on Kerry’s EP, Wicked In Rock.  Most of the other tracks have been performed by Kerry throughout her career however there is one fantastic original song.  You Can’t Be My Friend is written by Brian May (who also produced the album) and Don Black (of ‘diamonds are forever’ and Starlight Express fame).  There is also a new version of Diamonds Are Forever, an incredible rendition of You Have To Be There, a funky I Love It When You Call and the powerhouses of Anthem and Dangerland!

Kerry released a single version of ‘I’m Not That Girl’ on the 6th of September and the album was released on the 13th.  The album charted at number 15 on the official album charts the following sunday!

As an avid Kerry fan, I have heard her sing many of these songs before but I cannot express how glad I am that I now have studio recordings of these songs on one amazing album.  If, like me, you have followed Kerry’s every move for a few years, be prepared to not hear much new material.  If you have not heard of Kerry or are not particularly familiar with her and her music, this is an absolute must buy.  Full of power ballads, I guarantee it will be on repeat for weeks!

What do you think of Kerry’s album? Have you bought it?

Below is the official trailer for the album to give you a quick taster!

Will you be buying the single? Or the album?? Or, like me, both??

The Kerry Factor

Over the last few weeks, you will have done well to be a television watcher or a radio listener and avoided hearing the names Kerry Ellis or Brian May.  Both have been on a media tour promoting Kerry’s first studio album produced by the legendary Queen guitarist.  They have visited radio studios and various live and pre-recorded TV shows in the run up to the 13th September release date of the long awaited album called Anthems.

Kerry’s most notable performances have been on Tonight’s The Night, The Michael Ball Show and This Morning.  Kerry has been performing the title track from the album with Brian joining her towards the end of the track.  Each performance has been more powerful than the last and so those joining Kerry and Brian at Proms in the Park on Saturday (11th September) will be in for a mighty treat!

Kerry is a much talked about West End actress who began her professional career understudying Martine McCutcheon in My Fair Lady before continuing to star in Miss Saigon, Les Mis, We Will Rock You, Wicked and (currently) Oliver!  She has been a regular on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, performing in The Night of 1000 Voices and Chess In Concert.

The album features songs from many of these shows, plus a few that she sang in her solo shows in 2009 and some original songs written by Starlight Express writer Don Black and Brian May himself.  The album is not release for a few days, there are a few sneek peeks on YouTube but I am avoiding them at all costs so will put up a full review when I recieve the album.

Kerry will be signing copies of her album at HMV on Oxford Street on 13th September and then at Dress Circle (Covent Garden) on 18th September.

Are you going to any of the signings?  What do you think of Kerry and the release of this album?? How long have you waited forit!?

MH xXx

P.S I’ll leave you with her performance from Tonight’s The Night.

Rumours… Rumours… Rumours…

Well, there have been many rumours flying around theatreland the last few days!! Let me reiterate….these are RUMOURS!! None confirmed, all from the trusted world that is FaceBook!

So, it has been said that Kerry Ellis may extend her run in Oliver! The Musical at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane to its closing date in March 2011.  She is currently playing the role of Nancy in the production and it is published that she will leave the cast on October 2nd 2010, just after the release of her debut album, Anthems.

It has also been suggested that Kerry may take up the role of Fiona in Shrek.

And…..someone somewhere in the world heard that Ashleigh Gray may be looking to join the cast of We Will Rock You!!

About a month ago, rumours were flying around Musical Land because some very clever rumour-starter wrote on Ashleigh Gray’s Wikipedia page that she was considering the role of Nancy!

Numerous times, Oliver Tompsett’s name has been placed alongside the character of Warner in Legally Blonde…

While these are all rumours…I must ask…where do these start??  With the Ashipedia-gate, the comment was removed within 24 hours and gossip died down.  It will be very interesting, in 5 months time to assess to what extent there are truth in them!

Have you heard these or other rumours? Where do you think they come from? Do you think there’s any truth in them whatsoever??

Oliver! The Musical (and Kerry Ellis)

Well….you’ve heard about WICKED…you’ve heard about GLAMOUR…now for the other two exciting happenings of yesterday.

Firstly, because it was such a beautful day and we had 6 hours to kill between Wicked and Oliver!, we decided to head to Zizzi’s and then on the biggest ferris wheel in the world…well, the London Eye!  I’d been on it before, once, when it first opened a decade ago but it was really, mega cloudy so the clear skies helped us decide to take a ride.

Had it been a nasty day, the queue for the Eye would have been hellish but the sun was shining so we just caught some rays while waiting for an hour to queue.  The ride was amazing, we got some great photos and saw the sights!  We then hung around in Covent Garden for a few hours before heading to the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane.

First stop was to hunt down stage door, only after finding that and discovering our seats (ooo and having a cheeky glass of rose!) was I able to truly take in the beauty of the theatre.  It is the most beautiful theatre I’ve ever sat in and, just for a minute, I wished we’d sat a bit further back so that I could take in the view.  That thought didn’t last long though as we began to realise just how good the front row tickets (A7 & A8) would be.

I could go into a lot of detail about the show but if you haven’t seen it, I wouldn’t want to ruin it at all.  I will merely tell you why you must go and see it.

I love musicals, I’ve seen many and a few months ago I chose my top 10.  That has all changed!! So here is a quick list of why you must see Oliver! The Musical:

It was spectacular (from Matt, 21).

A fantastic array of talent from, not only experienced stage actors and actresses, but also from the children (from Matt too!!).

Every member of the company gave 110% and it showed in the energetic movement of the show.

The set was unbelievable with all sorts moving around the stage.  The stage is made of cobblestones so you really are in Dickensian England.

The lighting was perfect, not too much but just enough to really add an extra dimension to the show.

The music – WOW – I have never particularly liked the music in Oliver! but you really can’t help falling in love with it when it’s live, there’re kids singing, Kerry’s on stage and you’re having a good time.  The conductor was brilliant, being front row meant we could see his every facial expression and could see his passion for the show.

The costumes blew me away.  As someone who is really interested in costumes and has done a few herself, I always pay particular attention to them in shows.  Wicked costumes are amazing but I have been made aware (by the WICKED costume makers) that they are a pain to produce.  The Oliver! costumes were fantastic, each one was different in one way or another!

Meeting Kerry afterwards was the cherry on top of this awesome day!!  I think I just babbled at her but was so happy to get a photo and that she signed my canvas.  She’s such a genuine woman and her chemistry with the children on stage was evident throughout the production but particularly in the curtain call!  Bring on September for the release of Anthems.

You MUST MUST MUST go and see Oliver! and if you have…let me know what you thought of it below! Thanks so much!
