Visit Number: 26th

Recommend: Yes, one of the best and most entertaining shows on the West End.

Rating out of 10: 9/10 (1 point deducted because of how Denise Van Outen plays Paulette and also as the sets are quite shabby looking).

Describe it in 5 words: Entertaining, Fun, Positive, Energetic, Pink.

Donal’s Review:

It was with great excitement when I discovered I would be in London on the date when Carley Stenson was to be on as Elle Woods in her only scheduled show as lead. The ticket lottery was much busier than usual for a Tuesday – an indication of how eager fans were to see Carley in the lead role. There were also quite a few understudies and swings on this evening too which I feel really gave a new energy and vibe to the show.

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, it’s about sorority girl Elle Woods who is dumped by boyfriend Warner on the night she expects him to propose to her as she doesn’t fit into his plans and isn’t serious enough as he heads off to study Harvard Law. Elle defies all prejudice and gets into Harvard herself as “love never accepts a defeat” and realises she doesn’t need Warner, becomes a great lawyer and ends up finding true love.

During the show’s opening number “Omigod You Guys”, we gave a massive cheer to Carley as she made her entrance through the trap door as Elle. It was immediately noticeable that she was nervous and trembling a bit but also that she looked so natural in the role. She kept looking down at us for encouragement and said afterwards that she was so grateful for all the cheering we gave her. Other than a few little line fluffs, it was obvious that she was going to be a really great Elle.

From “What You Want” onwards she really started to relax and was incredibly funny in the role in particular when shaking her junk and her “so oh oh oh oh much better”. There was also plenty of eye contact with the audience (reminiscent of the days when Sheridan played the role and sadly lacking with Susan). One of the the true tests of how great an Elle is is how she sings “So Much Better” and she really nailed it. She also brought a real vulnerability to the role and you really wanted to cry for her during “Legally Blonde”.

There’s great chemistry between her and Alex Gaumond (Emmet) too, as could be seen in “Chip on my Shoulder” and “Take it like a Man”. She brought the perfect balance of vulnerability and comedy to the role as well as having a great voice. She really put her own stamp on the role.

Playing the role of Callahan was Lincoln Stone. He is by far the best Callahan I’ve ever seen. The role is normally played by Peter Davison. Davison plays the role as a dirty old letch and I don’t like how he plays it. Stone is a much younger Callahan and plays the role with an enormous amount of malevolent charm. He’s hugely charismatic in the role (unlike Davison who is very wooden and looks quite bored) and equally nasty. His voice is really excellent and he displays his vocal talents perfectly in “Blood in the Water”. The scene where he makes a pass at Elle is really quite menacing and you feel a lot more for Elle after she slaps his face and then fires her. With Davison the scene just doesn’t have that same impact and often I’ve heard the audience laugh when he does it which is not the intended reaction!

Special mention must go to super swing Jane McMurtrie who really stole the show as Gabby and the Stenographer. Her boob juggling, stenographer machine stroking, magazine flicking and page turning as well as general face pulling were hilarious. She is hugely talented and has played almost every role in the show at some point. The night before she played 2 characters (Enid and Whitney) in the same scene!

Weaker performances I feel include Denise Van Outen as Paulette though she has improved a bit since she joined the cast. Problem is that Paulette is meant to be a down on her luck hairdresser, not a hooker on the game – as Denise plays her. Her voice is also not as versatile as the alternate Paulette’s (the excellent Sorelle Marsh, whose octave rise at the end of “Ireland” reprise is spine tingling) and she basically plays herself up there. I find it very hard, impossible actually to warm to her or her Paulette.

Also, I find the current Warner (Simon Thomas) quite weak and lacks the charm that the previous Warners brought to the role. His “Well hello Marilyn” after Callahan fires Elle especially irritates me and the chemistry between Warner and Elle seems to be lacking compared to when Duncan and Richard played the roles.

Also excellent are Suzie McAdam as Enid Hoops, Siobhan Dillon as Vivienne (amazing voice but needs to be a bit bitchier in the role), Alex Gaumond as Emmet (perfect in the role and a superb voice), Tamara Wall is an excellent Brooke – an improvement on Aoife Mulholland and of course Chris Ellis-Stanton as Kyle/Dewey.

Legally Blonde really is one of the best, most entertaining shows in London. It’s hugely energetic – especially in numbers such as “Positive”, “What You Want”, “Harvard Variations” and “Legally Blonde remix” and is ridiculously camp. It also makes you think about how quick we are to judge and prejudice people based on their appearances. It still always leaves me with a great big smile on my face after the show ends.

Thanks for that amazing review Donal, I can’t wait to see the show again when I can afford to!!

Did you see Carley? Have you seen the cast since Sheridan left? What did you think?

Starring: Sheridan Smith (Elle Woods), Alex Gaumond (Emmett), Simon Thomas (Warner), Peter Davison (Callahan), Sorelle Marsh (u/s Paulette), Tamara Wall (Brooke), Siobhain Dillon (Vivienne), Chris Ellis Station (Kyle/Dewey/Grandmaster Chad)

Words and Music: Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin

Opened: 15th January 2010

Theatre: Savoy Theatre, London

Seat: Upper Circle Row D Seat 8

Seat Review: Upper Circle Row D Seat 8. A great view only impeded slightly on the right-hand side because of a tall man sat in the seat. You see everything and feel close to the action, although at times the cast plays to the front stalls so you can lose that feeling of connection.

Price: £36

Rating out of 10: 7

Recommend: Definitely. Such a fun show. Will make you roll in the aisles. So many big entrances and amazing songs. A feel-good show.

Describe it in 5 words: Heart-stopping, fun, pink, comedy, camp

Robert’s review: Decided to review by character. This was Sheridan’s last day as Elle Woods, so I have mentioned all the muck-ups that happened.

Sheridan Smith as Elle Woods: Fighting tears, Miss Smith still delivered a great performance. She really is great at comedy and sadness. She knows instantly how to improvise with the muck-up props to make the show even funnier than even the cast intended. For example, during Serious she came on stage to find Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps instead of champagne. She threw the lager into the ice bucket and kept eating the crisps, using the bag – instead of her handbag – to cover Warner when she says “just shut up.” She even took them off with her. And… as only Sheridan would, she did her own pranks on the cast. She wore a modified blue tracksuit with a bunny tail instead of her usual pink dress. She also kissed the actress playing Enid when they first appear onstage together.

Alex Gaumond as Emmett: A great Emmett, he is so likable which is the key to this part.

Simon Thomas as Warner: Instantly my favourite Warner. He was so composed during all the scenes where the muck-ups happened. His singing voice is amazing and his acting perfect. We were also graced with cameo appearances from former Warners Duncan James and Richard Fleeshman. Richard as a student at Harvard and Duncan as the pilot who jumps out from behind a sign after Sheridan.

Chris Ellis-Stanton as Kyle: He is perfect as Kyle really. His portrayel is very masculine and very advert like. He is very funny. One of his muck-ups include asking Sheridan to print her name. So she had to get up for a second time.

Sorelle Marsh as Paulette: Fabulous actress. Gave a heartbreaking rendition of Ireland that would break any heart. Also mentioned Benidorm during one of her scenes which set Sheridan off. Sorelle has the most amazing singing voice that blew the roof off the theatre. It was stunning. Sadly Denise van Outen had already arranged her first family holiday so couldn’t perform.

Siobhain Dillon as Vivienne: So fantastic! What a voice she has. Riffing and singing like mad. Thought she was great even if she wasn’t quite as bitchy as Caroline Keiff used to be.

The Delta Nus: A special mention here for Susan who never fails to impress me. I think her talent is incredible. They were all having a lot of fun, wearing “Goodbye” not “Elle Woods” at the end of the act, not stopping dancing when Sheridan shouts before What You Want, all grabbing her breasts – not just Susan – in Positive and many more wonderful additions.

Tamara Wall as Brooke: A great Brooke, she gives it her all and was so funny when she said she needed liposuction because she’d had 2 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Peter Davison as Callahan: Very rigid and serious in the show – really perfect for his character – many wondered if Peter would get involved in the muck-ups and he did. He started trying to kiss Sheridan, with tongue, during his seduction scene.

Did you go to either of Sheridan’s final day shows?? What did you think?

1. We Will Rock You

2. Legally Blonde

3. Apollo Victoria 80th Birthday Gala

4. Simply The Music Of Scott Alan

5. Wicked (BradDeejMan)

6. Wicked (MeadDeejMan)

8. Oliver!

9. Wicked (BradTuckMan)

10. Wicked (TompPilkKhad)

Who was the best performer in number one?

Sarah French (Scaramouche)

Why did you go to see number two?

I took a friend for her 21st, she chose the musical…we both LOVED it!

Can you remember a line/lyric from number three that you liked?

“There’s a light at the end of the tunnel” – Starlight back on the Apollo Victoria Stage.  Also when Ashleigh Gray and Oli Tompsett came onto the stage…I couldn’t control the noises that came out of my mouth!!

What would you give number four out of ten?

11

Was there someone hot in number five?

Danny Mac was Boq!!

What was number six about?

Prejudices.  Society judges the main character by how she looks, not how she is.  It’s a great story for teenage girls, all about self esteem and being true to yourself no matter what or whogets in your way.

Who was your favorite actor/actress in number seven?

Patina Miller was amazing!

What was your favorite bit in number eight?

The whole show was absolutely amazing…one of my favourites EVER.  Meeting Kerry Ellis afterwards was incredible!!

Would you see number nine again?

Most certainly…many times over!

What was the worst thing about number ten?

It wasn’t Ashleigh Gray as Elphaba.  Also saying goodbye to Ashleigh and Oli T. Veeerry sad times.

Which was best?

Oliver!

Which was worst?

I didn’t enjoy Sister Act as much as all the others but it was still fantastic!

Did any make you cry?

Deej’s Defying Gravity eveeeery time!!

Did any make you laugh?

We Will Rock You, Legally Blonde, Sister Act and Wicked were all hilarious.  Also Russ Abott as Fagin was AMAZING!!

Which roles would you like to play in any of them?

I’d love to give Elphaba a shot and I’d also love to be Elle for a day.  The songs in Legally Blonde are more in my range!

Which one did you have best seats for?

Number 5 Wicked…Front Row, Glinda Side!

I’ve tagged people on Facebook but I’d also love to see yours…so either do it in the comment section below or link it to your FB/twitter in the comments!

Name of Show: Legally Blonde The Musical

Date: 21st October 2010 Matinee

Starring: Amy Lennox (S/B Elle Woods) Richard Fleeshman (Warner) Alex Gaumond (Emmett) Jill Halfpenny (Paulette) Chris Ellis-Stanton (Kyle) Caroline Keiff (Vivienne) Peter Davison (Callaghan)

Words and Music: Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin

Opened: 15th January 2010

Theatre: Savoy Theatre, London

Seats: BB1-BB4

Seat Review: Wow, well what can I say about these seats?? Apart from they were possibly the best seats I’ve ever had in any show I’ve ever seen. The stage isn’t high in the Savoy so I could see everything, even the dogs! Also, the perks of sitting front row is that the eye contact I got with the cast was phenomenal and that I don’t think I will ever, ever experience anything like that ever again.

Price: £25 (Lottery)

Visit number: 2 (Hopefully out of 100′s)

Rating out of 10: 9

Recommend: Definitely, there seemed to be a lot of older guys in the audience enjoying themselves
and laughing along as well!

Describe it in 5 words: Sassy, Sharp, Camp, Brilliant, Clever

George’s Review:

When I entered the lottery, I immediately saw that Sheridan Smith wasn’t on that day and was in two minds of whether I actually wanted to see the show, but OMIGOD I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Amy Lennox came straight on the stage and you could see she was really giving it her all and her riffing was out of this world. She really made the occastion special and you could see she was giving  it everything. Even at stage door she didn’t mind having her photo taken with me (see above) and signing a few bits, bless her! Another cast member that deserves a lot of credit is Chris Ellis-Stanton, he was fab in the show, even if him and Jill were laughing at me because I wolf-whistled him. And they both couldn’t stop laughing during Legally Blonde remix.  But also, at stage door, he seemed to not mind giving a lot of time to his fans and signed everything I had, even though I hadn’t asked him too! He just asked if I wanted them done as well.  All the rest of the cast were fab, But these two just really stood out!

Thanks George for that great review.  Has anyone else seen any of the Legally Blonde understudies? What do you think of them?

This review is faaaaar overdue (about 2 months!!) but here it is and today, I’m testing out a new review formula for musicals/theatre!!

Name of Show: Legally Blonde The Musical

Date: 14th October 2010 Matinee

Starring: Sheridan Smith, Alex Gaumond, Aoife Mulholland, Chris Ellis-Stanton, Jill Halfpenny, Richard Fleeshman and Caroline Keiff. (Please be aware the cast has since changed).

Words and Music: Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin

Opened Officially: January 13th 2010

Theatre: Savoy, London

Seats: L31&32

Seat Review: Amazing seats…I would highly recommend them…especially when you can grab them when they’re half price like I did!

Price: £32.50

Visit number: 1

Rating out of 10: 9

Recommend: Most definitely

Describe it in 5 words: Hilarious, sassy, cute, witty and fun.

Strengths: Incredible script, catchy songs, heart warming story, fabulous actors and actresses, witty comedy and a hell of a lot of style!!  I have to say, I had heard multiple rave reviews online, FaceBook and via word of mouth and so I had high expectations of this show and, especially, of Sheridan Smith.  Those expectations were reached and surpassed!  From the opening scene right through til the final few numbers it was hilariously funny but with a clear story.   It was like it had been a musical all along, in fact, when I was watching it, unlike with Sister Act, I completely forgot about the film.  Here was a new Elle, a new story, a new setting and a new production and for that, the creative team must be praised.  It is a ‘must see’!

Flaws: Not suitable for young children, although not many musicals are!  Front row of the stalls are very close to the the extremely high stage…I wouldn’t choose to sit front row.

Tickets can be bought on Ticketmaster here.

Have you seen Legally Blonde?? What do you think? Have you seen the new cast??
