Kanye West and WICKED The Musical

I never ever in my wildest dreams thought I’d be blogging about Kanye West but here goes.  The man has taken to his twitter account to show what a misunderstood human being he is and has used London’s Favourite Musical (Laurence Olivier Awards 2010), Wicked, as his metaphor.

He proclaimed:

Who’s seen the play Wicked? I’ve seen it 4 times! Other than loving the music acting and costumes… it’s my story!!!

Then:

The Wicked witch of the west basically is so convicted to tell her’ truth when she does it she is outcasted by society and turned WICKED!

See for yourselves:

Paper Eden Launch Event

Well, I can’t deny it….I LOVE shopping for stationary! Places like PaperChase, WH Smith and even Wilkinson’s can give me hours of entertainment looking at notebooks, diaries, pens, folders, etc, etc, etc!  It was for this reason that I jumped at the chance to go to the launch of a luxury stationary company.

The company in question was Worthing-based Paper Eden.  The venue looked amazing with beautiful decor and mouthwatering food.  There were products in organised sections around the room for us to peruse at our leisure.  It wasn’t until I started looking at the products that I realised just how fantastic some of them were.  The brands included Kath Kidston and were very similar to PaperChase stock.

My favourite, and probably most useful product, was the 2011 Life Book.  It has everything you could possibly need to organise your life in one book including a budget section, to-do and shopping lists, week and month at view.  It’s 16 months so includes a crossover and shows you your summer holidays in one view (very useful for those of us that fill up our holidays very quickly!).  But possibly my favourite element to the diary was a Birthday and Address minibook that slides in the back of the diary and can be transferred to your next one – genius!

The company prides itself in only offering products from brands that guarantee only fairly traded materials.  They also ran on the evening a ‘name-the-bird’ competition.  I chose to name it Evelyn and I’ll let you know if I get anything for that name!  It was such a fab night and perfectly increased awareness of the company in a no-pressure environment.

Do follow Paper Eden on Twitter and Facebook for their latest offers and products and occasional competitions and let me know what you purchase from their website!

Are you a friend or foe of stationary?? Do you spend hours choosing your diary/notebook??

It’s Hula Time….

Look what landed over my back gate this morning!! Yes, I know it’s a Hula Hoop….Yes, I know I’m 21 years of age….Yes, I know £15 is stupidly expensive for a silly kids toy.  BUT this isn’t just a silly kids toy!! This is a 600g, 100cm diameter adult hoop from FireToys.  This isn’t just for fun, it is mostly for fun and a little bit to provide a means of toning up my stomach!  It’s so beautiful, in classic MiniHobo purple and black stripes and is big and heavy enough to provide enough resistance to probably (hopefully) make a difference.

So after the fun has worn off, I’ll let you know how I’m getting on with it and whether it’s worth investing in one (although at first impressions I won’t hesitate to say YES)!!

Can you do the hula???

The Truth About Boarding School…..

Some of my fondest (and least fondest) memories (with the help of a little facebook group):

  • midnight feasts,
  • dorm raids,
  • toast made from bread that NEVER went off,
  • marching into lunch,
  • heating that didn’t work,
  • windows that didn’t close,
  • washing that shrank,
  • scandals,
  • pranks,
  • evian bottles laced with vodka,
  • no homework (just prep),
  • trying to pretend you were sober when you well… weren’t..,
  • roll call,
  • compulsory prep time,
  • rising bell,
  • queues for cold showers,
  • leave weekends,
  • the games of MOOOOO/bogies/bollocks (delete as appropriate)
  • midnight poker tournaments,
  • tuck boxes,
  • ghost stories,
  • scratchy and strange uniforms even in the sixth form.

Any I missed????

Parachute – Will’s Live Cover Session on UStream

I cannot tell you how glad I am that I was on Twitter at 10pm last night (Friday 12th March).  It suddenly popped up on my screen…this message below:

parachute If I (Will) wanted to do a uStream session tonight where I play some cover songs for you all, would anyone watch at 5:45pm?

Well…tell me which crazy lune Parachute fan wouldn’t? So I tweeted back:

minihobo @parachute how do we watch it in the UK? and what time is that in london? 5.45 EST?!?!?

To my surprise, seconds later Will tweeted this:

parachute If I get 20 people, I’ll do one cover. 35= two, and 50= three cover songs. 545PM EST, 245PM PST, 104PM5 UK time. Link to come

So again, I replied with a practical suggestion:

minihobo @parachute Give us a #tag to use!

Will responded with another tweet with all the information I needed to make this, otherwise, boring Friday night, just a little bit special:

parachute Going live in 11 minutes at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/parachute-does-some-cover-songs . Hashtag is: #parachutelive

The UStream was amazing, all the covers can be found at my YouTube Channel.

I don’t want to give too much away but I do suggest that you head straight over to YouTube and check out Will’s awesome covers of:

Hallelujah – Originally by Leonard Cohen (covered by many including Jeff Buckley, Alexandra Burk and Kate Voegele)

Crash – Originally by Dave Crowder Band

Cannonball – Originally by Damien Rice

and…my personal favourite of the night

When The Stars Go Blue – Originally by Ryan Adams (covered by Bethany Joy Galeotti of Everly and Tyler Hilton on One Tree Hill)

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy…

Natalie Anderson (NessaRose) was the next to turn up, she was gorgeous!

And….lastly…but absolutely not leastly…Ashleigh Gray arrived shortly after 1.30pm.  She posed for this lovely photo…

Fiyero and Education!

What you are about to read are the opening and closing few paragraphs of an Oliver Tompsett as Fiyero in Wickedassignment about Diversity and Participation in Education!  I got a really good mark for them and though I’d share them with you because I enjoyed writing them (these paragraphs only!) so much! Enjoy!

‘The trouble with schools is they always try to teach the wrong lessons, believe me, I’ve been kicked out of enough of them to know’ sings male character, Fiyero, in the hit musical Wicked (Schwartz, 2004), before he continues with his philosophy of education.  His diverse needs have not been met in the most effective way in school, as a result, his participation in school and lessons has been terminated numerous times and this has resulted in exclusion in a place where there should be inclusion.  Consequently he has lost all faith in the education system as he feels it has lost all faith in him.  Because of various approaches in place in schools, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) have reported that exclusion rates in the United Kingdom are decreasing annually (2009).  These and other approaches will be discussed with respect to diversity, participation and meeting the needs of every child in the classroom.

A LOT OF RANDOM TALK ABOUT D&P

With regard to Fiyero, the musical character introduced at the beginning, Every Child Matters states clearly ‘clusters of schools can work together to…help retain within the school system pupils who might otherwise be excluded’ (DfES, 2003).  Reed (2005, p.14) suggests that ‘a coherent strategy…(should) be put in place that reaches every child at risk of developing challenging behaviour.’  She continues to suggest that there should be individualised preventative measures in place rather than only managing behavioural needs when rules are broken.  Such measures may reduce the impact of Fiyero’s behavioural needs on the rest of the class and could also stop him being taken out of lessons.  Consequently he may feel like he can participate more, he could make some friends and he may even become a calmer, happier pupil.

If Fiyero had gone through school after Every Child Matters was introduced and with the discussed approaches and strategies to diversity and participation in place, his story might have had a different ending and he might have had increased faith in the education system.  His particular behaviour needs would require strategies based around the individual approach.  If the root of his problems were at home, the teacher would notify the relevant experts and various services would work together to ensure the home problem was rectified.  Within school, Fiyero’s needs would be identified early on and plans would be put in place for effective provision.  He would have someone he could talk to if he was feeling angry or if he thought he was going to break the school rules.  His teacher would be in constant contact with his family, social worker, doctor, the police and any other professional.  The school would provide a breakfast and after school club so that if his parents did not have time to give him breakfast he could eat something.  Fiyero’s parents would have someone at school that they can contact for help, advice and support regarding Fiyero and his behavioural needs.  With all these strategies in place, his individual, diverse needs would have been met in a much more effective way and perhaps he would have been more willing to participate in lessons.

HOW TO: Feel Good About Eating Chocolate!

This all took place in a sunny English seminar (in the dark) on Thursday 21st January 2010!!  We were told to write an article on the invented health benefits of chocolate.  So, in the style of Andie Anderson, resident ‘how to’ girl at Composure Magazine (a fictional magazine from the film How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days) here is what we came up with…enjoy!!

Ever feel bad about sneaking in that snacky Snickers? Feel guilty about munching on mars bars or chewing on cherry choc?  From now on, there’s no reason to look behind you at that bursting bulge on your behind!  My recent poll suggests that 93% of you enjoy eating chocolate so I bring very bad news for those of you who fall in that unfortunate 7%.  Finally, after millions of hours and pounds put into research, it has been proven that chocolate is good for you, your health and your behind.

We once lived in sad times when chocolate was merely a tasty, snappy way of piling on those punishing pounds.  There were rumours of clogged arteries, demolished diet, high cholesterol, low activity, junk food junkies and a nation dying from chocolate triggered obesity.  Recent research has proved that in fact, chocolate can have a positive effect on these bleak prospects but triggers hormone based messages that imply the opposite.

Whether you’re guiltily indulging in hot chocolate, chocolate yoghurt, desserts or just eating the good old plain stuff, you have been, up until this moment, unknowingly performing miracles for your body and health.  It has been proved that the endorphines released into your blood stream can reduce depression, increase libido, motivate you to exercise and relax and calm you after a long day.  In fact, one Cadbury’s Twirl (pictured) has been discovered to be eight times more relaxing than a back massage.  Chocolate can also dramatically improve your iron levels, perfect for you or your anaemic friend.

But the cherry on the top of this mavarick chocolatey research is that the yummy sugar filled food now counts as one of your five-a-day.  Only 50g of chocolate contains as many antioxidants as a pint of green tea.  Combined with strawberries and wine, you’re a third of your way to five-a-day!  So sit down, relax and enjoy a guilt free bar of chocolate and glass of wine with me now…cheers!!
