Oliver! The Musical (and Kerry Ellis)
Well….you’ve heard about WICKED…you’ve heard about GLAMOUR…now for the other two exciting happenings of yesterday.
Firstly, because it was such a beautful day and we had 6 hours to kill between Wicked and Oliver!, we decided to head to Zizzi’s and then on the biggest ferris wheel in the world…well, the London Eye! I’d been on it before, once, when it first opened a decade ago but it was really, mega cloudy so the clear skies helped us decide to take a ride.
Had it been a nasty day, the queue for the Eye would have been hellish but the sun was shining so we just caught some rays while waiting for an hour to queue. The ride was amazing, we got some great photos and saw the sights! We then hung around in Covent Garden for a few hours before heading to the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane.
First stop was to hunt down stage door, only after finding that and discovering our seats (ooo and having a cheeky glass of rose!) was I able to truly take in the beauty of the theatre. It is the most beautiful theatre I’ve ever sat in and, just for a minute, I wished we’d sat a bit further back so that I could take in the view. That thought didn’t last long though as we began to realise just how good the front row tickets (A7 & A8) would be.
I could go into a lot of detail about the show but if you haven’t seen it, I wouldn’t want to ruin it at all. I will merely tell you why you must go and see it.
I love musicals, I’ve seen many and a few months ago I chose my top 10. That has all changed!! So here is a quick list of why you must see Oliver! The Musical:
It was spectacular (from Matt, 21).
A fantastic array of talent from, not only experienced stage actors and actresses, but also from the children (from Matt too!!).
Every member of the company gave 110% and it showed in the energetic movement of the show.
The set was unbelievable with all sorts moving around the stage. The stage is made of cobblestones so you really are in Dickensian England.
The lighting was perfect, not too much but just enough to really add an extra dimension to the show.
The music – WOW – I have never particularly liked the music in Oliver! but you really can’t help falling in love with it when it’s live, there’re kids singing, Kerry’s on stage and you’re having a good time. The conductor was brilliant, being front row meant we could see his every facial expression and could see his passion for the show.
The costumes blew me away. As someone who is really interested in costumes and has done a few herself, I always pay particular attention to them in shows. Wicked costumes are amazing but I have been made aware (by the WICKED costume makers) that they are a pain to produce. The Oliver! costumes were fantastic, each one was different in one way or another!
Meeting Kerry afterwards was the cherry on top of this awesome day!! I think I just babbled at her but was so happy to get a photo and that she signed my canvas. She’s such a genuine woman and her chemistry with the children on stage was evident throughout the production but particularly in the curtain call! Bring on September for the release of Anthems.
You MUST MUST MUST go and see Oliver! and if you have…let me know what you thought of it below! Thanks so much!
